My quest for a good night sleep

It all began when my son was born. The early days were pure joy and bliss, clouded by sleep deprivation but I was so charged with the excitement of being a new mother that I did not mind. A few months flew by, and before I knew it my energy was quickly depleting. I was still on 2-hour stretches of sleep at a time, I was utterly exhausted and was finding it hard to enjoy motherhood. Desperate to find a way out, I must have read everything I could find on baby sleep, but there is an overwhelming amount of information out there, more often than not conflicting each other, that the more I read the more lost I was.

All came to a breaking point when I decided I would sleep train my baby. As soon as I have taught my son the life-essential skills of sleeping independently, I realised that being a parent does not have to mean no sleep for months or years, and as our nights improved, I was able to be more patient and more mentally present as a mother. And sleep training did not make my son a miserable little guy – on the contrary he became a much happier baby, and for the first time I was able to leave him on his own on the playmat while I enjoyed my (hot!) cup of coffee. I was astonished to see that the self-soothing skills he picked up during the night has carried through into the day.

My need for survival led to curiosity, which led me into studying and digging deep into the science of sleep. As I dedicate myself in helping other families, I realise sleep issues are much more than a baby issue; there is a much larger adult population suffering silently and helplessly from sleep deprivation. Sleep challenges are almost always multi-factorial, often deep-rooted and can be transgenerational, and poor sleep can impact almost every part of a person’s waking life. I see a real opportunity to influence and transform the collective health of our society as a whole, starting from one of the fundamental pillars that is sleep.

As a certified adult and pediatric sleep coach based in Hong Kong and one of the few trained CBT-i specialists in the region, I have helped individuals and families locally and around the world improve their sleep. Whether you are looking for tailored sleep coaching for yourself or your child, or to include a sleep health event for your organisation, I am here to talk and help.
